What Type of Yarn to Use to Crochet Dishcloths? Frequently Asked Questions

Crochet Dishcloths are the one project everyone who crochets has made at one point or another. In reality, it is the one project beginners and crochet teachers turn to when teaching (or learning) to crochet. That is because it is a very simple project, like some sort of admission test to the hobby.

Can I Use Any Yarn to Make Crochet Dishcloths?

You could use any yarn that you have on hand to make a dishcloth, like a sports yarn or acrylic as long as it is as a try-out. If you are looking to keeping your dishcloth and using it, then I recommend using the right yarn.

So What is The best yarn to use when making a crochet dishcloth?

The best type of yarn you will use for making crochet dishcloths is cotton yarn

Why Use Cotton Yarn to Make Crochet Dishcloths?

Cotton Yarn is durable, strong, meant to get wet and be used A LOT.

Cotton Yarn allows a project to hold its shape. Cotton does not stretch.

Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton is an excellent choice to make crochet dishcloths.

Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton Yarn is another very good option that will hold multiple washes!

Lily Sugar 'n Cream is a widely used cotton yarn used to make dishcloths. In fact, the dishcloths made for my Most-Visited FREE pattern in this blog, Summer Breeze V-Stitch Dishcloths, were crocheted using this type of cotton yarn. I loved the rich colors and it crochets really well. Use a good hook and you are good to go!

Sunny Sky Star Stitch Crochet Coaster

This rainy Sunday afternoon I got to sit on my new bed and crochet the afternoon away. It was blissful! My husband was doing some reading on the couch and my children were napping. It was just me, my hook, and yarn.

I chose Sugar and Creme's Hot Blue color and contrasted with their Sunshine color.  The names of these colors just resonate summer to me. :-) Just like my Summer Breeze dishcloths, this coaster screams summer, sunshine, pool time, and clear skies.

Once I took the yarn out, I started with the typical slip knot and made a quick chain. I was going to need a quick project, one that I could complete during that Sunday's nap time because *I just needed to crochet. Period.* Ever have those times?

Finally I decided to make something using the Star Stich (Punto Estrella). It creates creates such cute bumps that make this stitch look intrinsic when in reality,  it's really not complicated. :-)

To make this coaster, I used the following materials:

Lily Sugar n Cream cotton yarn - or your choice of cotton yarn.
Crochet hook H (Clover hooks are my favorite!)

Abbreviations:
Check: What do the abbreviations mean?

Instructions:

For this pattern, I changed colors every 4 rows.

1) Crochet a chain of 25 stitches.

2) On the second ch from the hook, pick up a loop and in each of the next 4 ch (6 loops on hook), yo and through all loops on hook, ch 1 (this forms the eye of the star), *pick up a loop in the eye of the last star, pick up a loop through the back of the last loop of previous star, pick up a loop through same ch as last loop of previous star, pick up a loop in each of next two chains.  At this point, you should
have 6 loops on your hook.

Okay, so now that you have the 6 loops, yo through all 6 loops, ch 1, repeat*. When you get to the last ch, finish with a hdc on the last stitch.
Turn your work.

3) Ch. 1, 1 sc in hdc (from previous row), 1 sc in eye of star st, 2 sc in star of each eye across. Finish this row with 1 sc on top of the turning chain.
Turn your work.

4) Ch 2, pick up a loop in the front part of the second chain from hook, then pick up a loop in the back part of the same ch, pick up a loop in each of the next 3 sc, yo through all 6 loops, ch 1. *pick up a loop in the eye in the of the last star, pick up a loop in each of the next 2 sc, yo through all 6 loops, ch 1, repeat. * Finish this row 1 hdc in last sc.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until coaster measures 5 inches approx.

Hope you enjoy this pattern! What colors will you make your coaster?

Have a wonderful day and find some time to crochet, it's good for the soul!

Crochet: Heart Cookies - Free Pattern

When it comes to Valentine's Day, my mind goes off thinking of romantic music like Michael Buble, Gary Barlow, and other Latin artists like Alberto Plaza. Good lyrics and a good voice along with a plate of full chocolate cookies.

As I have mentioned in other posts, my kids love, love, LOVE, to play restaurant and pretend to cook all kinds of foods like soups, rice, and baked goods. I have made them Empanadas and Buttery Toast for their play food.  This time, I made them a seasonal item for their restaurant, crochet HEART shaped cookies. Yum, yum!  I'm a huge chocolate fan so I made them chocolate cookies filled with raspberries, mint, and vanilla.  This way they can have some more variety to offer to their clients. Different flavors for their clients!

Materials:

Cotton - Lily n Cream
Hooks: H to make the hearts
             G to join the hearts
Tapestry Needle

Materiales:

Lana de Algodón
Ganchillo: H para tejer los corazones
                  G para unir los corazones
Aguja para guardar los hilos

Steps:

Pasos:

Basically, I made two hearts using an H size hook for each cookie using a basic circle with an increase and then worked up the shape using tall and short stitches.  Twinkie Chan did a fantastic job in creating this pattern.

Using the G hook, I held two layers of hearts, making sure to match the stitches and began working a slip stitch, chain 1, and 1 single crochet in each stitch all around.

Usa el ganchillo y toma dos de los corazones asegurándote que todos los puntos estén parejos en la misma ubicación. Comienza donde te muestro en la foto, hace un punto razo, 1 cadeneta, y después continua todo alrededor con un punto bajo.

Fun with Yarn and Fabric Book Review

Fun with Yarn and Fabric includes more than 50 projects to crochet, sew. The book is very colorful with vivid images. It really takes you into each room where the pictures where taken. The amount of light and happiness in this book makes you wish it would last forever! I think that's the point of this book, to encourage you to unleash your creativity and take it to a new level where you can combine different mediums. The author, Susanna Zacke, invites you to play with your fabrics, threads, and yarns. How fun is that!

Many of the projects included can be made from upcycled towels, blankets, baskets you might have in your home. The ideas presented in the book could be easily adapted to use it in a project you might still have as a WIP at your home. (what does WIP mean?)

Overall, this is the best eye candy book I've encountered related to crochet lately. Just make sure to follow your favorite tutorials and patterns to guide you in the process of making projects from the book.

Let Fun with Yarn and Fabric inspire you!
