Dual Language Days of the Week Printable

Hi Fellow Teachers, Homeschoolers, and Language Learners!
Below is a printable you can use for your classrooms, homework folder, or calendar wall at home or school. All you have to do is get the pdf file through my teachers pay teachers store

I made the days of the week earlier this year by hand for my kiddos, but my handwriting is a bit too small for them to see it from the table. So I just knew it was time to make an improved set that would be visible to them at all times.

How do I use it?

1. Sing the song 'Days of the Week' to the tune of the Addam's Family theme song in English. Here's a good video through YouTube.  Right after, we sing the song in Spanish

2. This is when I introduce vocabulary such as "today - hoy", "yesterday - ayer" and "tomorrow, mañana". I use hand motions to teach the concepts. For example:

  • today - point fingers down
  • yesterday - use thumbs above shoulders which will indicate something's already happened.
  • tomorrow - turn hand from today to an open palm.
Please let me know if this makes sense...I could take a picture or do a video if you would like.

Once we know what day is today, I use colorful ribbon attached to a paper clip and clip it to the day we are currently on.  The kids can do this part. They'll love it!

3. These are the questions you can ask as a final review for the calendar:

  • What day is today? Que dia es hoy?
  • What day was yesterday? Que dia fue ayer?
  • What day will be tomorrow? Que dia sera mañana

I love having the days of the week posted on our wall, because it gives a visual count of which day of the week we will be going on a trip, having a visitor, going on a play date, etc.

When you use it, take a picture and send use the hashtag #TeachingwithFabi on Instagram so that I can see it too!

Happy Teaching! Hasta pronto!

My birthday

Recently I got to celebrate a very special birthday with my family and friends. Can you guess how old I’m now?

I’m totally giving it away and I am quite alright with that.  This is a birthday I had been looking forward to for quite some time probably because of the movie '13 Going on 30' with Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo. I want to be  "thirty, flirty, and thriving"

I am so excited about this year and everything the Lord has in store for me because I trust His promise: "For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future". (Jeremiah 29:11)

Here’s a picture of my delicious cake: Chocolate Caramel Crunch sprinkled with sea salt. Oh, Wow!. It was SO good: chocolately, sweet, and salty... Perfect combination for this gal!

Want to know what I got?  (this post contains affiliate links to Amazon. Thanks for your support!)

One of my favorite gifts I received from my Hubster is my brand new spiralizer. Do you have one?  It’s a handy machine you can use to turn vegetables such as zucchini, beets, carrots, broccoli into noodles. It only takes a few minutes to spiralize your veggies and enjoy a fresh meal!

I will be sharing what I am making with it next week! Stay tuned!!!

Available through Amazon

I also received a HoMedics Foot Spa from my parents. It works so great and is perfect to use after a long day standing and walking around. My feet feel so much better! Gracias papis!!!

Available through Amazon

A friend gifted me a gift card to one of my favorite places, Starbucks!!!! Oh yeah! Hello Chai-Latte and Cake Pops!  We enjoy taking walks together to Starbucks and enjoy a treat. Last time we went there, we also took some children's books to read there. The kids thought it was great to take our reading time outside of home to the coffee shop.

I also want to thank everyone who called, sent cards, and wrote me on fb to wish me a happy birthday.  You all rock!!!! You made my day. :-)

Thank you for celebrating with me!

How to Make a Crochet Fabric Fusion Dress

This post contains affiliate links.

The life of a crafter tends to revolve around trying new patterns, combining materials, making something completely new. Sometimes it turns out just like we imagined it would, other times...well,  those times are good too. The process of crafting  is what makes it fun and worth the ride. One book that has really inspired me into this fusion technique has been Fun with Yarn and Fabric: More Than 50 Projects to Sew, Crochet, it is filled with projects that combine fabric with yarn into beautiful projects like cushion covers, blankets, etc.It is also so colorful that it will really motivate you into trying new color schemes.

Some time ago, I got this turquoise chevron fabric from Hobby Lobby with the intention of making a dress that would combine crochet and fabric. Just like a fusion blanket, I would make a fusion dress: fabric and crochet together to make a new dress.

This Project

This time I am making a dress that will consist of a crochet collar and fabric bodice to fit like a 5T. Since it is a much bigger project that will need to endure washing and wear, the entire project would need sewing with the sewing machine.

So off I went to my closet to reach for my very lightweight, easy to use, computerized sewing machine from the top shelf. Then I took it to the table and got set up quickly. Then I grabbed my pieces: collar and bodice, pinned them and got them ready to sew.

I already knew I could sew quilts and thick batting with this machine. But this time it was a matter of sewing through the yarn and the cotton fabric. I mean, could the machine do the job? Would it be able to feed the fabric? Will it break a needle?

I was very content because this sewing machine took the job like a pro! The fabric fed through it really well and it did not break any needles. Another reason why I have been so happy with my machine is because it sews through thick fabrics with ease!

Steps:

     1.   Crochet the collar for the dress. This will be the section that will cover the shoulders.

How to Make the Bodice for the Dress

2.    Cut your fabric using one of your daughter’s dresses or tops. Here you will cut the armholes out too. Cut 2 pieces. The book Make Your Own Dress Patterns teaches you step-by-step how to make dresses from your own patterns with lots of pictures and tips.

SSew the bodice on the sides with 1/2 seam allowance on the wrong side. Do not sew the armpits shut. Do the same with the second piece.

How to Assemble the Crochet Fabric Fusion Dress

Bring the collar and the bodice to the sewing machine to assemble the pieces.

3.    Gather the top section of the dress (one side at a time) using a long stitch. Make sure it matches the length desired for the crochet collar. Repeat with the other fabric.

4.    Using right sides together, sew the sides of the fabric and finish the raw edge (or serge it).  Finish the bottom seam for the dress as well.

5.    Now, begins the fun part. You can do this!!!!

6.    Pin your dress to the crochet collar and begin sewing using a slow speed. Remember to remove your pins as you go.

7.    Repeat the other side.

     8.  Sew a button or two to the collar. Layer the new dress with leggings if desired.

Hope you love it as much as we do!

Snails, el Caracol

Snails - Caracol

  • What do you know about snails?
  • Show pictures of snails: google 'snails' or 'caracol.'
  •  Talk about their bodies -
    • tell them that caracoles or snails don't have feet.  My kids, wondering what that would be like, threw themselves on the floor and pretending to move (arrastrarse) like a snail. Hehehe. I am pretty sure that was their favorite part of the lesson!!!
    • caracoles have wet bodies - sprinkle water on their arms and legs and have them compare a wet arm with a dry one and which they prefer. Of course they said that having their arm wet made them want to go to the pool!
  • Craft time
    • Make a snail: use a paper plate, cut up pieces of paper, and antennas. Have the child cut and paste the pieces.
    • brush on a glue and water mixture (more glue than water) to make it shiny which will make it look like it's wet.
  • Music:

Book Review: Ve, Perro, Ve or Go, Dog, Go

We've read the title Ve, Perro, Ve!  (Go, Dog, Go!)  by P.D. Eastman multiple times lately. The kids enjoyed seeing the colorful pictures of the dogs and the different transportation systems the animals used to reach their final destination, a party at the top of a tree. Quite humorous!

In reading this book, they were able to learn about a variety of transportation systems, the meaning of the traffic lights and its relation to speed.

When first reading the title, I asked the children what they thought "ve" meant. If it meant to 've' as in ver or to see someone or if it mean ve as in going for which I did a hand motion to indicate 'to go.' I used only Spanish when explaining the difference between the homophones ve and ve

The first time I read the story all the way through, a different time, the children had to use picture contexts to tell the story.  Another time, I read each sentence and the children had to repeat what they heard. They already know the meaning and understand the short story, so this exercise was mostly to practice pronunciation and intonation when reading in Spanish.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to teach reading in Spanish and for young children who enjoy animals and transportation.
